A Hampshire manufacturing business has urged one of the government ministers responsible for Brexit to focus on long-term benefits.

Fareham-based Barnbrook Systems gave its views at the consultation event with Lord Bridges – who is the parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department for Exiting the European Union – at the Land Rover BAR America’s Cup base in Portsmouth.

The award-winning company was among aerospace, defence, manufacturing, aviation, marine and maritime firms at the event arranged by Portsmouth City Council leader Donna Jones and backed by the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership.

Andrew Barnett, chief technology officer at Barnbrook Systems, said: “I firmly believe British manufacturing and innovation is the best in the world.

“As a longstanding and successful exporter, we understand the challenges and opportunities presented by international trade.

“It is crucial that the Government considers long-term objectives and benefits for business over the next 10, 20 and 30 years during any Brexit negotiations rather than being distracted by any short-term considerations, political posturing or unreliable economic data.”

He added: “Lord Bridges’ visit was very welcome and gave some encouragement that the Government will listen to the voice of business during the very complex negotiations ahead.”

Lord Bridges chaired the EU roundtable debate as part of a national consultation exercise to gather views before negotiations commence following the triggering of Article 50 for Brexit at the end of March. MPs have also backed Brexit and draft legislation is now passing through Parliament.

Thirty-five strong Barnbrook Systems, based in Fareham Park Road, is a designer, developer and manufacturer of electronic and electro-mechanical switching devices and systems for aerospace, defence, maritime, rail and commercial industries. Its products also include its innovative remote condition monitoring BlueCube technology.

The company serves UK and European markets, and also exports worldwide. Its clients include Leonardo-Finmeccanica, BAE Systems, Boeing, Gulf Stream, Safran, GE Aviation and Eaton.

Barnbrook Systems signed a six-figure deal with aerospace and defence giant Leonardo-Finmeccanica at the Farnborough International Airshow in July of last year.
