Health technology is big business, with the Thames Valley something of a hub for UK health tech. Especially, understandably, Oxford.

The term itself is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the "application of organised knowledge and skills in the form of devices, medicines, vaccines, procedures, and systems developed to solve a health problem and improve quality of lives". We're talking about the likes of hardware, pharmaceuticals, procedures, organisational systems and IT infrastructure, software and tools.

With October's 2022 Thames Valley Tech Awards just a few months away, we thought we'd cast our eye over some of the region's most innovative health tech companies. Here are just some of the companies at the forefront of things:

Actegy - Bracknell

A family-run enterprise that will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, Bracknell's Actegy Health focus on designing, developing and marketing drug-free healthcare technologies. Currently, they're concentrating a lot of their energy on their main range, Revitive.

Revitive has sold more than three million units and helps:

  • 'Reduce pain and discomfort in the legs, feet, and ankles'
  • 'Reduce swelling in the legs, feet, and ankles during use'
  • 'Improve blood circulation in legs & feet'
  • 'Increase walking distance before pain for people diagnosed with poor circulation'

Oxsight - Oxford

With the use of cutting-edge AI smart glasses technology, Oxsight is dedicated to transforming the lives of people with vision impairments.

The company was established in Oxford in 2016, six years after their founding members started their research at the University of Oxford, looking into how technology might help those who have limited eyesight. Their innovative work earned them attention on a global scale and inspired them to launch a business to provide wearable technologies for those who have sight loss.

Their hugely-impressive smart glasses are made to fit any occasion and function by taking a picture with the built-in camera, editing and improving it with the onboard computer, and then displaying it on the smart glasses' brilliant, colourful OLED panels. The portion of the eye with sufficient remaining vision is then able to see this image.

Owen Mumford - Woodstock

Oxfordshire-based Owen Mumford are a market leader in the medical device sector, with a broad and impressive product portfolio that includes cutting-edge automatic injection systems for medication delivery and cutting-edge blood sampling tools.

They have nearly seven decades' worth of expertise and have offices, production facilities and distributors all around the world. They provide healthcare solutions for the treatment of various medical ailments, with sophisticated worldwide research, design, and manufacturing capacities.

Occuity - Reading

With their head office in Reading's iconic Blade building, Occuity are a 'pioneering technological solutions to alleviate some of the world's greatest healthcare challenges. And they're doing so with a clear vision and values, a world-leading team of experts and nine internationally-recognised patents.'

The main focus of the company is the successful development and rollout of a variety of non-invasive handheld medical devices that can be used for either non-clinical screening and measurement or for individual patient monitoring for conditions like diabetes and Alzheimer's.
