Ascot waste management company Shorts Group has taken a major step forward towards its goal of 0% of its rubbish to landfill, thanks to the support of Lloyds Bank.

After agreeing a six-figure hire purchase facility, the firm has invested in a new recycling line that will send only 5% of its rubbish to landfill.

It is now expecting to take on new contracts in all sectors and give clients the confidence that their waste is being recycled efficiently while being kind to the environment.

Established in 1957, Shorts provides services ranging from waste management, skip and plant hire, demolition and agricultural contracting to companies, households and local luthorities across Berkshire and the surrounding counties.

Gary Short, managing director, is fully supportive of a ‘Zero to Landfill’ programme and the new equipment means that the business has moved one step closer to its goal.

The hire purchase facility allows the company to gain the equipment through an instalment plan, and comes just 12 months after another funding package that enabled Shorts to update its truck fleet.

Short said: “It is vitally important that we continue to invest in the latest equipment. Our longstanding relationship with Lloyds Bank has been pivotal in our expansion to date.”

Steve Mountain, area manager at Lloyds Bank Commercial Finance, said: “We are committed to providing alternative forms of finance for our customers, including asset-based lending and trade finance and it is great that Gary could benefit from this.”

Peter Evans, relationship director at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said: “The latest corporate sustainability research by Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking shows that more than half of SMEs recognise the benefits of implementing sustainable business practices and some, such as Shorts Group, will gain improved profitability as a result of this.”
