As one of five high-profile influencers and experts from the world of business, public policy and academia, Stef Nienaltowski, CEO of Shaping Portsmouth, will be sharing his views on the opportunities, challenges and future of work in the Solent at the webinar on 13 July – What skills will businesses need to ‘level up’ the Solent? – organised by The Business Magazine and KPMG.

Stef joined the Shaping Portsmouth’s Business & Enterprise (B&E) programme in 2013 as a volunteer, and one year later took over as Chair of the group. At the start of 2017 he started his role as the Director of Shaping the Future of Portsmouth. Stef’s career has spanned over 46 years with 37 of these working for IBM UK in a variety of administration, financial and business operational roles. He left IBM in 2010 and worked for a start-up venture, Virtustream, as their EMEA director of operations for one year before moving to Integritie UK as their chief operating officer.

He is passionate about helping to make Portsmouth the No 1 City in the UK in which to Invest, Live, Learn, Work and Visit, and in his role as CEO of Shaping Portsmouth he firmly believes this vision will be achieved.

Stef said: “In the City of Portsmouth we have organisations that cover most of the main Industries in the UK, with the emphasis on construction, engineering, scientific and technical as the main established ones but with the creative sector and green industries expanding at a very fast rate.

The need we have now is to ensure that from senior school through to the workplace there is a coordinated approach to the skills that are needed by our businesses. As we see one type of skill replaced by another, we need our colleges and their adult education offerings to be connected with our businesses and under the programmes we run that will happen. 

What the adult workforce of today, and tomorrow, will need is a broader approach to the type of job they want and be flexible to learn, and re-learn new skills that will result from the ever-evolving ways in which businesses operate. Some core jobs and skills are always going to be needed, but more and more we will need to make sure we are adapting to the changing environment and that we provide the learning and skills transfer so that our citizens can manage the transitions they will have to become used to seeing.”
