Businesses keen to ‘go global’ and trade overseas after the pandemic can access a training programme run for the first time from Basingstoke.

The Covid-safe courses and workshops, delivered by Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, begin in September 2020 and cover all aspects of international trade.

They are aimed at companies across north and east Hampshire who are active in overseas markets whether as exporters or importers.

The Chamber has provided international trade training at its Fareham office for many years but this is the first programme to be delivered in Basingstoke.

Course content includes the practical steps necessary to stay legal on import and export procedures, Customs declarations and documentation, payment methods, and international commercial terms, known as Incoterms.

Managers and staff working in sales, purchasing, finance, shipping, customer service and freight forwarding are all likely to benefit from the training.

Jacqueline Highmore, Hampshire Chamber’s international trade manager, said: “Trading relationships with other countries were already set to undergo change because of Brexit, but Covid-19 has introduced a new paradigm altogether.

“The months ahead will see a considerable reprioritising of activity as companies re-tool for a post-pandemic world.

“We have designed our training programme to upskill those people tasked with keeping the movement of goods and supplies both smooth and legal.

“We have run workshops and courses for many years in the south of the county and we are delighted to be offering the programme from Basingstoke for the first time.”

Highmore said preparations are under way for classroom-based learning, with social distancing measures in place, but pending demand and public health advice at the time the option of virtual training may be considered as an alternative.

Hampshire Chamber has secured sponsorship for the training from Surrey Translation Bureau, a translation specialist based in Farnham on the Surrey-Hampshire border and whose client base includes many Hampshire companies.

George Cooke, managing director, said: “We decided to sponsor the programme as it is an ideal opportunity for us to present ourselves to a very relevant target audience.

“For 35 years we have been translating all types of texts in many languages, but the common factor for our main clients has been their international trade – either manufacturing products for export or advertising their services to an overseas market.

“Text translation is of course just one aspect to consider and we would recommend the whole training package to anyone in any sector.”

The programme itinerary is:

  • Understanding Export – 28 September (full day)
  • Import procedures – 14 October (full day)
  • Inward/outward processing – 19 October (morning)
  • Classification of goods – 19 October (afternoon)
  • Documentary letters of credit/methods of payment – 4 November (full day)
  • Incoterms rules – 18 November (morning)
  • Preferential rules of origin/ Customs procedures and documentation – 23 November (full day)
  • Export documentation – 9 December (full day)

Participants who complete six of the courses will qualify for the Foundation Award in International Trade assessed by British Chambers of Commerce and equivalent to NVQ Level 2.

All the courses will be delivered from Hampshire Chamber’s office at Grove House, Lutyens Close, Chineham Court, Basingstoke, RG24 8AG.
