An Isle of Wight councillor has called for additional flood protections to be included in the annual budget.

The 2022/23 budget is to be presented to a full council meeting this evening.

Councillor Ian Dore submitted a ‘Flood Money’ amendment to the proposed Alliance budget, in order he said: “to protect Binstead homes and businesses from flooding.”

In July 2021, Binstead properties were extensively damaged by flooding.

The Alliance budget has won cross party support for its focus on coastal flood protection, affordable housing and a commitment to Net Zero emission targets.

There is a £6million commitment to coastal protection and flood defences at Bembridge, the Bay area, and Ventnor, which will protect 5,000 homes from flooding.

The budget will also see the continued development of an Island-wide electric vehicle charging strategy, support for the UNESCO Biosphere and Dark Sky Status, and establishing a Mission Zero Community Hub to work towards the Isle of Wight’s net zero emissions targets.

However Councillor Dore said: “Binstead residents who have spoken to me since the budget was released are furious. The disappointment that washes over Binstead is almost on the level of the flooding last July.

“The statement used in the Budget, is not relevant for Binstead. The Environment Agency are not responsible for drainage and surface water flooding. That falls firmly feet of the Council. Wearing wellies, if they are visiting our fair Ward. You could be forgiven for thinking that the £60 million commitment is the answer, it isn’t.

“On the 23rd at Full Council, I will be making my evidence-based case and fighting for justice.”
