Reading's Green Park station is nearing completion

After many delays due to the pandemic, Green Park Station in Reading is expected to finish work soon.

The construction project, headed by Reading Borough Council, began in the spring of 2019, had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

The £20 million station is said to be "progressing well". So far, a pair of 150 metre platforms, a station building, an overbridge, bus interchange, parking facilities and two car parks have been erected.

The new Green Park Station will be situated on the Reading to Basingstoke line and there will be a half-hourly service between the towns throughout the day.

Reading Borough Council's lead councillor for strategic environment, planning and transport, Tony Page, commented: "It is fantastic to see the progress on this major development captured in such dramatic aerial footage and I’m delighted to see the progress on the construction of the new Green Park Station so far.

"All being well, we are now close to construction being complete. The station will then be commissioned by Network Rail and GWR before it can open for public use this year."

The station itself will also have two platforms with disabled access and a multi-modal interchange in addition to the other facilities provided.

Once it is complete, the station will help ease the pressure of queueing on the A3 by offering a more sustainable mode of travel.

Tom Pierpoint, the GWR Business Development Director, said: “It’s exciting to see Reading Green Park Station really starting to take shape. We are working closely with the Council and Network Rail to deliver the project which will provide even better connectivity for customers.

Green Park Station is expected to be open for public use during the summer of 2022.
