Businesses in Southampton will be able to find out how to protect themselves from cyber crime at an event in the city next month. It comes as the UK saw one of its biggest spamming operations last week, with 711.5 million email addresses targeted by malware.

Led by IT firm Taylor Made Computer Solutions, seven local organisations have come together to hold a cyber security breakfast on October 17. ‘How to prevent a cyber attack’ will educate businesses on cyber security and, in order to hammer home the message of just how easy it is to fall victim, a computer hacking will take place there and then.

The event, at The Hilton in Botley Road, will feature practical tips and advice that IT managers and business leaders can implement straight away. Speakers will cover everything from how businesses can protect their data to the legal implications of falling foul of data protection laws.

Nigel Taylor, founder and managing director of Taylor Made, said: “It’s only when you see first-hand how easy it is to be hacked that you realise how important it is to keep your data safe. This event will allow us to do just that in a safe environment and give local businesses the advice they need to protect themselves.”

Among those sharing their expertise will be representatives from:

  • Taylor Made Computer Solutions
  • Rothmans
  • Moore Blatch
  • Datto
  • Swinton Insurance
  • ESID
  • Fusion Insurance

Taylor added: “Whatever the reason a hacker chooses to attack, whether it be theft of funds, fraud, espionage or hacktivisim, their evolving techniques are an ever-growing concern for businesses striving to protect their information and assets.

“We’re looking forward to combining our expertise with that of other businesses at this seminar and ensuring Southampton businesses are up to date with the latest advice.”
